Paul H. Schmidt, 97, of Manchester, Iowa, died on Tuesday, August 4, 2009, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. He was born on January 16, 1912, at Sand Springs, Iowa, the son of John and Matilda (Eiben) Schmidt. Paul was baptized and confirmed at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Monticello. He was educated in rural schools near Sand Springs and attended Manchester High School. Paul farmed with the family in the Manchester area.

On February 16, 1935, Paul was united in marriage to Elda M. Becker. Together they started farming east of Manchester, moving to a farm south of Manchester where they farmed until he retired in 1975. Paul also drove school bus for West Delaware Schools for fourteen years. He remained on the acreage until his health failed and he entered the Good Neighbor Home in 2006.

Paul was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Pythians. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bird watching, and mowing.

Survivors include two children, Gordon (Alice) Schmidt of Manchester and Marvelyn (Rick) Davis of Martinez, California; six grandchildren, Duane Schmidt of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, Paula (Don) Krogmann of Center Point, Laura (Bill) Thomas of Manchester, Jason (Jennifer) Ferguson of Penacook, New Hampshire, Gary (Andrea) Schmidt of Manchester, and Chad (Amy) Ferguson of Winter Garden, Florida; twelve great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and three siblings, Lester Schmidt of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; Velma Burke of Strawberry Point, and Hilda Smith of Dolphin, Alabama.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elda Schmidt in 1984; two sons, Eldon and David Schmidt; two grandchildren, Karla and Michael Schmidt; and two great-grandchildren, Paul and Olivia Schmidt.
